"Jerusalem Stone" captures the way beauty finds ways to overcome obstacles. The delicate stems of the plant push through openings in the rock to emerge on top. They burst into flower, sprinkling a delicate shower of pink into the air. This sculpture was inspired by the conflict and beauty of the Middle East. Cyclamen plants grow wild in Jerusalem, the way violets and dandelions grow in New England. They pop up in the cracks in stonewalls and among stone pavers on steps and walkways. The block shapes resemble the yellow limestone construction blocks that are used in buildings all over Jerusalem. They push against each other unevenly, as do the people who live in the region. As their uneven faces meet, they leave crevices where the delicate cyclamen flower takes root. This is a hopeful piece and speaks to my desire to see peace take hold and flower in Jerusalem. This sculpture would look great on a sideboard, dresser, bookshelf, or desk.
