Setting Fears Aside
Size: 11 x 20 x 18 inches, hand spun yarn, linen yarn, mulberry paper, wood, gathered branches and leaves, rigid foam, canvas, clay, wire, acrylic paint, screws
The pensive bird stands guard over a nest holding two fluffy chicks. The bird’s wings are slightly raised, ready to act to protect its young. The babies nestle close together in a bed of reeds. Knitted in shades of blue, the bird evokes a feeling of stillness and calm. This is a bird committed to the future. It has escaped from the cage (both physical and metaphorical) seen in the prior pieces in this series. The only reminders of that prison is the black wire “E” resting on the ground and the letters F – A – R- S in the twigs of the nest. In the face of a frightening world, this bird fosters hope. Rearrange the letters in and around the nest to discover a more secure future than the fear it has left behind.
This piece is part of my narrative series Eternal Vigilance. View and read about the series here.
