“In the Marsh” plays with the colors and textures of cattails and bird feathers.  The little wren hides among the reeds, delicately perched on a cattail stem.  You can see the tall leaves — brown, gold, and green — swaying in the breeze.

Marshes and wetlands play a critical role in maintaining ecological stability. They absorb water from high tides and storms, then release it when the tides subside. They replenish groundwater supplies and are integral to providing clean drinking water. The world is losing wetlands at an alarming rate. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service estimates the U.S. has lost half its wetlands since 1780. This piece peers into a marsh to glimpse a wren perched on a cattail, inviting us to appreciate the beauty of the muddy world on the edge between land and water.
