“Shrill Call” is one of a series of sculptures that captures birds in their natural habitats. Natural but not pristine. These landscapes bear signs of human intrusion. The birds too have been affected. Each has a body part made from a cast-off object. This songbird has legs made from bent knitting needles and a beak made from a barrette. It is a jarring contrast against the bird’s brown fuzzy-feathered body and brightly colored paper wings. Rising waters threaten this songbird. Perched on a rock, which should be high above the water, the bird calls out to sound the alarm. The ripples of water approach ever closer.
