Expand Your Knowledge of Art

Understand the art you see in galleries, learn how an artist thinks, or get inspired to make art with a message.  These illustrated talks are great for art classes, libraries, gallery exhibits, craft guilds, and yarn shops.

Knitted Art: Upending Expectations

Artists have been making serious art using knitting for decades. In this presentation, you’ll learn about Mary Walker Phillips’ innovative abstract knitting in the 1960s and find out how other early experimenters spread the idea of art knitting.  This background will lead to a sampling of the explosion of art knitting that began in the 1990s.  Artists took advantage of the characteristics of knitting to address gender stereotypes, conceptions of domesticity, environmental issues, mass consumerism, and community.  You’ll see knitting take shape as sculpture and performance art.

An Artist’s Journey Beyond Socks & Sweaters

Wondering how an artist thinks? Where do the ideas come from? Hear how I moved from knitting sweaters to making conceptual mixed media sculpture. Find out how I searched for teachers, synthesized diverse sources, and developed techniques of my own.

This talk can be combined with a small exhibit of my artwork.

“Perhaps the best thing about Eve’s talk was that she is so articulate and artistically talented. I was delighted by her yarn sculptures and their complexity. The meaning behind the sculptures was fascinating as her art is inspired by nature and Eve’s concern about the environment.”
Jane D.

Activist Art Knitting: Subtle and Bold

How do artists employ art to communicate ideas and engage the public in social action? Learn how artists use knitting to raise awareness of issues and call for societal change.

I will introduce you to the work of Lisa Anne Auerbach, Janet Morton, Liz Collins, and many more.  Find out how they use the special characteristics of knitting to get their message out to a broader audience.

“It was inspiring to learn about so many artists who use knitting for activism. Eve has a strong command of the subject and her enthusiasm for the material is contagious.”
Laura Z.
